Welcome to our
urban mine
ETH Sustainability, the ETH Institute for Science, Technology and Policy (ISTP) and the
ETH Development Economics Group (DEC) welcome you to the urban mining project.
Give nature a hand(Y)
Mobile phones are a rich source of minerals, such as copper, lithium and even gold. Mining these minerals often has large negative impacts on the environment in low-income countries, which can be reduced if everyone recycles their old mobile phones. Given the tiny amount of metals in a single phone, it might seem inefficient to recycle mobile phones, but unused electronics are actually a rich source of minerals. In comparison to a primary mine, the quantity of metals is relatively high: 60 times more silver and 13 times more gold can be recovered out of a ton of recycled mobile phones than from a ton of ore.
During the month of October, we will be collecting old mobile phones for recycling. So, it seems the right thing to do is to join our urban mining project and recycle those old phones just laying in our drawers.
